UNSW Law encourages students to gain practical experience of the law by offering a range of outstanding internship courses. Internships give students an opportunity to apply their knowledge from course work into genuine workplace experiences in areas such as advocacy and policy with a range of organisations. Students can also take on the responsibility of student editor for law publications and journals.

Through internship placements students obtain training, practical legal experience and a unique insight into their future careers. The learning experiences obtained through the internship placement itself, as well as through coursework, will give students the opportunity to critically analyse the law, the legal profession and the legal system.

Students who enrol in an internship will also be required to attend internship classes as part of the placement. These are compulsory for all undergraduate and Juris Doctor students. Master of Laws students will be individually supervised by a Faculty Academic Supervisor.

Undergraduate and Juris Doctor students can now apply to extend their internship with LAWS3777 or JURD7777 Law internships: Extended (6UOC). The extended internship must be with the same organisation as their initial internship for LAWS3555/JURD7555 and must be either in the same term or the consecutive term. Students must negotiate a research project with their host organisation and submit a proposal to experiential@unsw.edu.au to get approval from the Director of Experiential Learning. Please see the handbook for further information and InPlace documents tab for a proposal template. Submissions must be made prior to week 10.
