LAWS3555/JURD7555 - UNSW Law Internships

This course affords Undergraduate LLB and Juris Doctor students the opportunity to work in a partner organisation which undertakes advocacy or research in aspects of policy and practice relating to an area of law. The program provides formal and informal training, as well as supervised practical experience, in planning and implementing key aspects of research, writing, legal assistance, advocacy and related activities. You will be critically analysing the operation of the law, policy and the legal system as part of the course.

Please note all of the placements are unpaid.

What does the course involve?

All available opportunties with our partner organisations will be advertised each term during the Experiential Learning application period on InPlace

Most of the partner organisations are based in the Sydney area. Self-organised internship placements may be approved for other organisations by the Director of Experiential Learning. 

Students will need to attend face to face classes and complete asynchronous activites in regular terms. You may be able to attend the scheduled classes remotely with special permission from the Director. Over summer term classes will be online with additional asyncronous activites. Students must complete assessments and attendance requirements as part of these courses



LAWS3777/JURD7777 Law Internships: Extended
Students can apply to extend their internships with the same host organisation for an additional 6UOC. The course must run consecutively or concurrently with the standard one term internship course (LAWS3555/JURD7555). Students will need to negotiate with their host organisation supervisor to plan a project. The project may be in the form of a law reform submission, contribution to websites or blogs, advocacy campaign design, article for publication, presentation or memo to staff of the organisation.
You will be supervised on placement by a nominated supervisor at your host organisation and also be supervised by an academic supervisor from The Faculty of Law & Justice.

The extended internship course cannot be taken as an individual course or more than 1 term after completion of a one-term internship. 
You will undertake 10 days on the standard internship AND 10 days on the extended internship. 


Concurrent enrolment delivery
If you are approved to be enrolled in both LAWS3555/JURD7555 Law internships and LAWS3777/JURD7777 Law internships: Extended concurrently (in the same term) you will need to have 2 full days available each week to attend as well as the timetabled classes. You will undertake your standard internship on day one and work on your extended internship project on day 2. You will complete 20 days in the one term for the 2 courses. You must be approved and enrolled in LAWS3777/JURD7777 before Term commences. Concurrent delivery is not available in summer term.
Attendance at classes for LAWS3555/JURD7555 are mandatory

Consecutive enrolment delivery
When your project is approved for the extended internship you will be enrolled in the term directly after completing your LAWS3555/JURD7555 law internship. You will attend your extended internship 1 day a week over the 10 weeks of term (70 hours).

To apply for an extended internship students will need

1. to negotiate a reserach task with their host organisation. 
2. A proposal must be submitted via Inplace to gain approval from the Director of Experiential Learning. See the "To Do" list in Inplace, there is an item for the extended internship. Follow the extended internship link for more information about how to apply and locate the proposal template. 
3. Submit your application before week 10 of the term prior (Summer term applications due in week 9).

To be eligibile, you must:

• you must already have been offered/enrolled in an internship and have discussed with your supervisor the`opportunity to extend your internship to work on a project to be negotiated between you and the organisation
• You must be able to undertake an additional 10 days in the same term as your primary internship or in the consecutive (immediately following) term.
• have your project approved by the Director of Experiential Learning

When do the courses run?

Please note that other experiential learning opportunities, such as Clinics, Journals and Moots, are available to students in addition to internships.
