Steps to apply for advertised opportunities for Law and Criminology placements:

1.     Read the course information

Information on each course is available via MyLaw> Law & Justice in Action page and UNSW Online Handbook. It is also advised that you review the course outline for additional information. Please ensure you have read and understood the requirements of the course before applying. 

 2.     Apply DURING the advertised application period

NOTE: Application submitted outside of the application period will not be included in the application assessment process.

The key applications dates are available on the main page of Law and Justice in Action. No applications will be accepted outside of the application period unless special permission is given by the Director of Experiential Learning (this applies to Self-Organised Internships only). Special permission must be sought within a month of the application window closing.

Log into InPlace, fill in your details listed as a "To Do" item and view available opportunities.
Select the internship you wish to apply for by clicking the APPLY button in the bottom righthand corner of the window. 
Any comments entered in the application screen are not taken into account for the application all information must be covered in the statement of interest.

Please submit 1 PDF document with your application containing:

• a copy of your resume;
• a statement of interest for the particular host organisation, with your response to their selection criteria (500 words maximum); and
• a copy of your academic statement. (MyUNSW pdf is suitable)

Self-organised internship applications require additional documentation; please visit the Self-organised Internships page for information. You will be required to fill in your details and submit your forms on InPlace

Please note you can only apply for two internships per application period (not including Journal internships for law students)

3. After the application is submitted

All applications with the relevant supporting documents submitted are checked for eligibility then sent to the course convenor or the host organisation for assessment. Some organisations may require an interview for their placement.
We will endeavour to finalise all placements prior to your enrolment appointment so you can be enrolled in the relevant experiential learning course before enrolling in other elective courses. However, many organisations have limited resources and the internship program is not their first priority, so it can take some time for a response to an application. If a placement is not finalised prior to the enrolment period, you should enrol in another elective. Should your application be successful, then that course can be dropped before the census date with no penalty. Should you be unsuccessful, then you will not be disadvantaged due to the waiting period.
 
NOTE: All placements/enrolments will be finalised two weeks before the start of term. Please do not contact the Experiential Learning team or Student Services prior to that.
 

 4. Notification of Outcome

Once all placements are confirmed*, the you will be notified of the outcome of your application via Inplace. If you are offered a placement you must accept or decline the offer. Upon your acceptance of the placement you will be manually enrolled in the course by Teaching Support staff. 

*Please be advised that we receive the outcome of law clinic applications from round 1 and 2 at the same time. All students who have applied for clinics will be advised of the outcome after all round 2 applications have been assessed. Please do not fill in a second application for the same clinic.

Notifications will be sent to your UNSW email account. It is your responsibility to check your UNSW email account on a regular basis. You may also check InPlace for outcomes to your applications.

 

Applying for Law Clinics

To apply for the Land and Environment Court Clinic and Police Powers Clinic please include your: 

• Statement of Interest
• Resume
• MyUNSW academic statement.

In your Statement of Interest highlight why you are applying and the skills and experience you possess that make you the best candidate to take part in the clinic.

For KLC Clinics applications please attach your academic statement only.

NOTE: You are not permitted to repeat the same CRIM, LAWS or JURD course even if you propose undertaking an internship with a different host organisation. However, you can enrol in more than one WIL course. It is generally advised that only one WIL course be taken per term, however, if you wish you may be enrolled in one internship and one clinic in a single term.  Please take this into account when applying for multiple placements.

Students in their final or penultimate year will be given preference as they will not have another opportunity to apply. Many organisations also prefer students in later years as they have required knowledge that those in early years are yet to acquire.

UNSW Law and Criminology WIL courses are available to UNSW Law and Justice students only. Given the competitive nature, UNSW Law Experiential Learning courses are not available to cross-institutional or non-award students from other universities.
